Canon is classical leader and orthodox champion in the business of cameras. Since logo and brand are named after 1000 arms goddess of Kwanon (goddess of Mercy), Japanese company can always have something up their sleeves. And with no mercy.
Serious compact mirrorless model from Canon EOS M5 is fact. It's here and it's quite capable and promising.

Connectivity and touch focusing with screen while looking through a viewfinder are very tempting (and useful) features.
It can (on) be said that this is high-end APSC mirroless camera, it has all cutting edge technology that company has on the market. This is bold move, risky and exciting. For the first time Canon is making a product that is in direct competition with other product of it's line - Canon 80D.
The moment Canon announced M5 is quite good in terms of technological maturity. They've realized all features in probably the best possible way and are slightly ahead of Sony, Olympus and Panasonic in that department. They've also shown that this camera is fun to use - very important for attracting new consumers.
While this model deserves high praise and is good sign of competition it also shows two things:
1. Canon is in a hurry to enter mirrorless
2. Company is not risking too much - I believe they didn't develop good selection of native lens selection for a reason - to give a little edge of their DSLR models.
In terms of numbers and income, sales of digital cameras are shrinking. It seems that the only way to keep going up is to change the rules - make higher quality cameras also fun/easy to shoot with. This way a quality margin between dedicated cameras and smartphone cameras is aided by good user interface and experience.
Canon is here to change the rules, hopefully soon and for good.
